A big list of books that all musical types should be reading.

I find it very hard to get through most guitar playing books and would suggest that you don't get too worried about reading everything that's out there, as you'll find most of what you need is inside you somewhere already. However, these are all really good for covering the fundamentals...

Frank Haunschild's The New Harmony Book (This is a really clear explanation of the tonal system and its logical development. Its great if you've hit a rut with just major and minor)

Wayne J. Naus' Beyond Functional Harmony (Based around analyses of Yellowjackets tunes, it explains ways of writing chords and tunes that go beyond ii - V - I and all that stuff)

William Russo's Composing Music (Really simple and helpful ideas)

John Cage's Silence (If you're ready for it...its ready for you...)

Bobby Owsinski's The Recording Engineer's Handbook (Lots of lovely stuff about where to stick your microphones)

Ralph Denyer's The Guitar Handbook (This is where I began to learn a great many things)

Mick Goodrick's The Advancing Guitarist (Fantastic, tells you nothing and suggests everything)

Guthrie Govan's Creative Guitar Techniques I & II (The boy can play....I hate him!)

Andy Jaffe's Jazz Harmony (Very clear, I've taken loads of things from this book)

Philip Toshio Sudo's Zen Guitar (Slightly naffly written in places, but a funky little book that might help illuminate your path (Here, misses!)

Eric Taylor's ABRSM Theory Guide Part I (Regardless of the style you play, you should know all of what's in here)

Gardner Read's Music Notation (For the obsessed only)
